Abstract
Abstract ON 12 JANUARY 1982 THE 120 MEMBERS OF THE WORLD COUNCIL OF Churches Commission on Faith and Order, meeting at Lima (Peru), voted with strict unanimity that the text on Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry (BEM) was sufficiently “mature” to be transmitted to the churches for their response and reception. That decision marked the provisional climax of a journey that had begun at least fifty-five years earlier, at the First World Conference on Faith and Order in Lausanne (Switzerland) in 1927. My purpose now is to retrace that itinerary, speaking first of the long approach, next of the conditions of travel, then of a first arrival (Lima itself), and finally of the continuation of the journey; for BEM has turned into a document that many churches are willing to carry with them on the voyage toward fuller unity.
