Abstract

Abstract This article examines Simone de Beauvoir’s use of a literary motif to convey her philosophical position on inequality in different geographical locations. The “lightscape,” an evocation of place that foregrounds light’s obfuscation of gritty reality, is considered across three works: Les Belles Images, The Mandarins, and America Day by Day. In these texts, the lightscape’s bifurcated presentation of a given locale reflects how inequality hides in plain sight, and divides the rich from the poor, respectively aligning them with the beautiful and the abject.
