Abstract

In this chapter, Coutras offers a much-needed study on Tolkien’s natural theology. In Tolkien’s theology of creation, transcendental light is integral to his fictive world. His portrayal of the material world as inseparable from the transcendent is compatible with Celtic enchantment and Catholic mysticism. This portrayal of transcendence is heavily suggestive of the “light of being,” a prominent concept in Balthasar’s theological aesthetics. Coutras argues that the ontological light of creation in Tolkien’s world is ultimately reflective of God’s light. By elaborating on Tolkien’s portrayal of the Elves and Valinor, Coutras draws out Tolkien’s concept of creation in the fullness of its original design.
