Abstract

The 19F NMR of powders of elpasolites (A 2BLnF 6) is reported for Rb 2NaTbF 6, Rb 2NaHoF 6, Rb 2NaErF 6 and Cs 2KPrF 6. The high site symmetry of the fluoride and lanthanide ions in these cubic lattices results in an axial shift tensor. The traceless part of this tensor is found to be largely composed of a contribution from a point dipole interaction but also contains spin-transfer contributions of two types: a covalent mechanism and a polarization mechanism. Expressions for both types of these contributions are derived and used to analyze the experimental results. Both mechanisms appear to be important in the second half of the lanthanide series whereas in the first half of the series the polarization mechanism seems to be dominating the spin-transfer term. The spectra of Cs 2KPrF 6 exhibit changes with temperature in the range 130–430 K indicating dynamical phenomena.
