Abstract
In philosophy it's known as the lifeboat test. Imagine you were in a lifeboat with a cockroach, a chimp, and a child. Who would you throw overboard first to save the rest? Of course, the cockroach would go without a second thought. But now imagine it is a choice between a healthy young chimp and a brain-damaged child in a deep coma. Or a 10 day old viable human embryo and the same terminally ill child. The lifeboat test can be used to draw out the finest ethical distinctions.
