Abstract

The widely distributed Caribbean plant presently known as Callithamnion byssoides Arnott ex Harvey in Hooker is here described as C. boergesenii sp. nov. Differences in branching pattern, carposporophyte shape, and spermatangial branch structure distinguish Caribbean material from both eastern and western Atlantic plants referred to C. byssoides. Segregation of the new species is further supported by hybridization experiments. Both eastern and western Atlantic isolates referred to C. byssoides failed to hybridize with C. boergesenii. The new species demonstrated a regular Polysiphonia-type life history in culture.
