Abstract

The maximum life spans of individual shoots have been determined for a number of sedge species (Gorham & Somers 1973; Bernard & MacDonald 1974; Bernard 1975), but no information has been published on the temporal pattern of mortality in such shoots. This paper reports the results of detailed observations on mortality made over one year on Carex rostrata Stokes, a dominant species in mires in many parts of the North Temperate Zone.
