Serials: The Journal for the Serials Community has been digitised and can be accessed in full on this website. All content is freely available on an open-access basis. Serials was published between 1988 and 2011. In 2012, the journal was retitled and is now published as Insights: the UKSG journal.

My title is a take-off on two made-for-TV movies: ‘The Librarian: Quest For The Spear’, and ‘The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mine’. That is true – but I think they should just relax and have a good time with it The reason this is relevant to what I want to discuss here is that the important work that the librarian does happens when he leaves the library and engages with the world outside. The terms ‘libraries’ and ‘librarians’ are not synonyms, but we often use them as if they are It is a significant symptom of the anxiety we feel about what our future as librarians holds that we have a hard time separating our own identities from the libraries in which we work
