Abstract

This chapter deals with the following Iraqi liberation operations, called Tawakalna operations, in the southern sector, one in the Shalamja area, and the other in the Majnun Islands area. It describes the battlefield, the Iranian forces and their deployment, the planning and preparations by the Iraqis for those operations, and the course of the operations themselves. The chapter deals also with an operation carried out by the Iranian opposition forces, the Mujahidin Khalk, to “liberate” the town of Mehran un the central sector. In those victory operations the Iraqi Army restored its honor and demonstrated its new capabilities that had been significantly improved, compared to those of the earlier war years. They also sought to destroy once and for all the Iranian war machine, including the army and the Revolutionary Guards.
