Abstract
In this paper we discuss the design of the LHCb triple-GEM detector for the M1-R1 region of the muon system together with the prototype tests. The LHCb muon system is presented and the requirements for an M1-R1 detector are discussed. The detector design is outlined and the prototype results in terms of time resolution, cluster size, discharge probability per incident charged particle with a high intensity pion/proton beam and high rate behaviour are presented.
