Abstract

A 3 MV Van de Graaff accelerator was used together with a 40 cm 3 Ge(Li) detector in a time-of-flight arrangement to study the de-excitation γ-rays following the inelastic scattering of neutrons from 197Au. Using incident neutron energies up to 1.3 MeV, accurate γ-ray energies and intensities as well as their threshold behaviour were determined. From these data together with structure considerations a consistent level and decay scheme for 197Au was constructed. The level energies, decay γ-rays with branching ratios, and spins and parities are given for 18 excited states.
