Abstract

In 2005 it was prepared a new curriculum for high school geography which based on “process approach” as different previous curriculum by the Ministry of National Education. So it was prepared by an approach focus on “skills education”. This is one of the positive innovations in this curriculum according to previous one. In this study, it was investigated the level of the access to geographic skills in the 9. grade geography textbook according to geography curriculum. The activities, visual quality of them, materials and content of them were studied by qualitative research methods. According to results, there is a “gap” between “geographic skills” in the curriculum and geography textbook. Some geographic skills which aren’t in the headline of “Geographic Skills” of curriculum were written opposite to 9. grade curriculum standarts. When it is considered that the aim of curriculum is to reach “geographic skills”, this textbook should be renewed according to geographic skills. Thus, it can be understood that final aim of geography curriculum is to achieve geographic skills instead of teaching geographic standarts and geography lessons can be taught as a lesson which considers “skills education”.
