Abstract

The primary aim of this research study is to highlight the level of competencies of the academic nurse managers in the higher education institutions in Bicol Region. Specifically, the perceived level of competencies of the academic nurse manager themselves along the following key areas: a) manager-leader, b) practitioner, and c) researcher; the level of competencies of the academic nurse managers as rated by the faculty and students along the key areas: a) manager-leader, b) practitioner, and c) researcher; the significant difference in the competencies of the academic nurse managers along the three key areas as rated by: a) self, b) faculty, and c) students. At the end of the study, the researcher proposed a competency program to further enhance the competencies of the academic nurse managers in Bicol Region.The researcher used the quantitative-qualitative survey design resorting to descriptive-evaluative method of investigation in this study. The study made used of a modified questionnaire-checklist based on the eleven key areas of responsibilities of a nurse. The questionnaire-checklist and rubric underwent content and construct validity. The results yielded positively. The level of Competencies of academic nurse managers in the higher education institutions as manager-leader, practitioner and researcher were all excellently. However, the self, faculty and students’ assessment yielded a significant result as regard the academic nurse managers’ leader, practitioner and researcher role in higher education institutions respectively.
