Abstract The results of direct imaging observations of the twin quasar 0957+561 and the intervening gravitational lens galaxy responsible for the splitting of the quasar image are reported. Observations were obtained under good seeing conditions with an image intensifier at the Cassegrain focus of the 2.2-m telescope on Mauna Kea. The center of the galaxy is found to be approximately 1.00 arcsec north and 0.19 arcsec east of the southern quasar image. The apparent core radius of the galaxy is observed to be approximately 0.24 arcsec, however may be larger if the expected third quasar image is nearly coincident with the galaxy and contributes a significant amount of light. The shape of the galaxy profile determined cannot discriminate between the cases of a small core radius with a faint third image and of a larger core radius with a bright third image.
