Abstract

William Milne was born in 1785 at Kennethmont, Aberdeenshire,Scotland. After his father's early death, Milne supported family as a farmhand and carpenter while receiving an education from his mother and a Sabbathschool. At sixteen, Milne sensed God's free grace remitting eternal wrath that he feared his previousindifference to religion and his profane swearing had surely incurred.' Three years later, he left Church of Scotland for Congregational Missionary Kirk at neighboring Huntley, which endorsed conviction of Evangelical Awakening that Christians must extend spiritual revival and social reform taking place at home to their non-Christianbrothers and sisters abroad andtherebyhasten in-gathering of imminent worldwide kingdom of God. Gratitude for his own redemption, admiration for mission heroes like David Brainerd (1718-47), avid reading of Mis­ sionary Magazine, and dedication to the coming of Christ's kingdom among nations, inspired Milne to become a for­ eign missionary, 2
