Abstract
This paper explores the relevance and significance of Maoist gender ideology in contemporary China, by investigating how it is experienced, remembered, and evaluated by women in China today. The paper is based on in-depth interviews conducted in 2006 with 14 women in Beijing. It demonstrates that the Maoist gender ideology has a long-standing influence, which can be discerned through a careful examination of gender performance of various forms in China today. It investigates the complex relationship and historical continuity between the Maoist and post-Mao eras where gender is concerned, and reassesses the impact of Maoist gender ideology on some Chinese women’s lives and its ideological and institutional significance for women’s struggles for gender equality today.
