Abstract
The article is a reprint of the introduction to the publication International Organisation and Dissemination of Knowledge: Selected essays of Paul Otlet. Translated and edited with an introduction by W. Boyd Rayward. The article is reprinted with permission of the International Federation for Information and Documentation (FID). The book is available in Australia from DA Books and Journals.Paul Otlet, 1868 to 1944, anticipated the need for revolutionary technological developments to access and manipulate information, and speculated about new organisational structures to support the new information services which would be created. This article briefly considers Otlet's conceptual work to develop the new discipline which he called ‘documentation’, and which is a forerunner to modern information science.
