Abstract

The electromagnetic character of the composite structure composed of metallic wires in a homogeneous mu-negative medium was studied using the method of finite difference time domain. Under the condition of transverse electromagnetic or transverse electric wave, left-handed material (LHM) can be made if the medium has proper anisotropic negative permeability. Negative permeability along H⃗ of wave is the necessary and sufficient condition for LHM. Permeability along E⃗ of wave plays no role in realizing LHM, while negative permeability along k⃗ destroys the left-handed property. It gives a clear direction to produce LHM using uniaxial or gyrotropic medium.
