Abstract

The codification of international law of the sea in the twentieth century was an important component of international activity to regulate maritime activities and to create an international regime for the World Ocean. Despite the fact that the main successes in this activity were achieved after World War II, the first attempt was made already in the interwar period, as a part of the codification of international law undertaken under the auspices of the League of Nations. The experience and achievements gained during this generally unsuccessful attempt were taken into account and used in the post-war period by the UN and its agencies.
