Abstract

The essential oils from the leaves of Melaleuca deanii F. Muell.and Melaleuca hypericifolia Sm. have been obtained by hydrodistillation in yields 0.27 - 1.79 % and 0.30 - 2.28 % respectively. The almost entirely monoterpenoid oils have been analysed by GC-MS. The Melaleuca deanii oils contained major amounts of α-pinene (25.6 - 51.6 %) and 1,8-cineole (31.8 - 47.0 %) and lesser amounts of limonene (2.6 - 4.0 %) and α-terpineol (5.9 - 10.2 %). The Melaleuca hypericifolia oils contained mainly 1,8-cineole (74.0 - 80.9 %) and lesser amountsof α-pinene (3.8 - 10.2 %), limonene (3.5 - 8.9 %) and α-terpineol (1.4 - 3.1 %). The production of leaf oil in a single tree of Melaleuca deanii, monitored over a period of 46 years, diminished from 1.79 % to 0.10 %.
