Like any society that cherishes intelligence, America has traditionally treated retarded people essentially as deviants. The self-fulfilling prophecies that result from labeling people as retarded had until recently left the field of mental retardation in a state of despair, and left many parents with no effective alternative to institutionalization of their retarded children. But the prospects for decent habilitation and education of retarded persons have improved dramatically in the last two decades, chiefly because a number of new and enlightened principles have been applied to comprehending and solving the problems of mental retardation:'
