Abstract

Abstract The mediaeval church of St Martin Outwich, escaping destruction in the Great Fire of 1666, was damaged in the Bishopsgate fire of 1765. Preliminary plans for its rebuilding by George Dance the Elder have been identified. In the event, the building was repaired and only the steeple rebuilt. In 1796, following deterioration of the fabric, the church was demolished and replaced with a new building by S. P. Cockerell. The plan of his building has been identified from the rearrangements undertaken by Sir Charles Barry in 1827. Falling population and pressure to release part of the site for street widening resulted in the destruction of the church and amalgamation of the parish with that of St Helen Bishopsgate in 1873.
