P. Abstract The physical conditions in the preremnant supernova are studied by examining spectrophotometric observations of the Type II supernova 1980k in NGC 6946 obtained to age 650 days in maximum light. The spectrophotometry shows that the H-alpha flux declined exponentially with a mean lifetime of 108 days. The results suggest that radioactive decay of Co-56 might be directly linked to the energy source for the emission lines of the late-type Type II supernova. If true, models of these exploding stars are required to produce about 0.1 solar mass of Ni-56.
