Abstract

René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke (4 December 1875 — 29 December 1926), better known as Rainer Maria Rilke, was one of the most influential modernist poets in the 20th century. He wrote both verse and prose. His writings were greatly influenced by the philosophy of existentialism.
 Born in Prague, had Austrian citizenship, wrote in German. Lived and worked in Trieste, Paris, Switzerland. At the end of his life, suffering from pancreatic cancer, he described his torment in verse.
