Abstract

Pennant's Swimming Crab, Portumnus latipes (Pennant, 1777) has been recorded from the North Sea and British Isles to the Azores Islands and the Mediterranean (see Monod, 1956; Zariquiey-Alvarez, 1968; Ingle, 1980). Lebour (1928, 1944) described the zoeal stages, megalopa and early crab stages, but her descriptions are too brief to allow comparisons with recently described larvae of other Portunidae. In January 1986 an ovigerous female o? Portumnus latipes was trawled in Ria Formosa, South Portugal, by Mr. C. Sousa Reis. The hatched larvae were reared to the second crab stage and provided sufficient material to give a des cription of the complete larval and early post-larval development.
