Abstract
Langerhans cells (LCs) function as the most peripheral outpost of the immune system. Although first identified in the skin, these cells probably originate in the bone marrow and migrate actively between the epidermis and the lymph nodes. They appear to play a critical role in immune surveillance and the development of contact allergy. The importance of these findings in the pathogenesis of cutaneous malignancy is discussed.
