Abstract

SUMMARY. A parallel is drawn between the psychopathology of Tennyson's Lady of Shalott and a more recent sufferer's, in that both withdrew from the sensory world. The poem illustrates the more recent patient's experiences, some of which can be understood in terms of such concepts as Guntrip's schizoid processes, Winnicott's maternal mirroring functions, and Fairbairn's egoand object-splitting.*
