Abstract

The Lady Dick was written in 1985. Parts of it were originally written as a love letter, including the Lethal Weapon monolog, which I find now a very frightening indicator of my emotional state circa 1985. Fortunately, friends intervened and convinced me this was, for lack of a better word, a play. If some eager beaver of the thespian persuasion wants to take a whack at this very young piece of work, I'd be delighted. Green light. Only one condition-make sure the actresses are actresses-female, that is. There's a disturbing tendency to put men in my plays and since one of my motivationsfor writing is to create women's voices, this kind of takes the joy out of it for me. Help me out with this one, OK? Otherwise, cut and paste and deconstruct to your little heart's content. The play was originally produced at the WOW Cafe. The cast included Alison Rooney, Peggy Shaw, Ana Maria Simo, Sharon Jane Smith, Carmelita Tropicana, Kathy Thomas, Eva Weiss, Susan Young, and myself Original music and lyrics were by SharonJane Smith. The set was designed by Alice Forester, andJoni Wong did the lighting. I'd like to thank the following people for their help: Kate Stafford, Becky High, Lois Weaver, Arthur Austin, Lori E. Seid, Ela Troyano, Uzi Parnes, David Cale, Tom Murrin, Dona Ann McAdams, Lynn Hayes, Sarah Schulman, Kate Davy, Amy Meadow, and the entire WOW Cafe. Rights for this and other plays can be obtained by writing Sue West, 166 Second Avenue, New York, NY 10003.
