Abstract

AbstractThis chapter presented the Kurdish issue as a transnational political issue involving various sub-state, state and global actors. The aim of this chapter is to provide key knowledge about the Kurdish issue, which, in essence, denotes the struggle of the Kurdish nation as a minority group in four states: Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria. The deprivation of the Kurds’ right to their own sovereign state and the historical repression of the Kurdish people in these four states are at the foundation of a perpetual political and armed conflict that manifests itself differently in each state. The geopolitical dimension of the Kurdish issue is marked by the involvement of different external actors with varying motives and interests. Hence, this chapter provided an actor categorization. Two categories of actors engaged in the Kurdish issue have been identified: principal and secondary actors. Principal actors have a direct interest in the Kurdish issue. These actors have the ability and the willingness to change the course of the Kurdish issue. Secondary actors, however, are those without a direct stake in the Kurdish issue. The nature of their engagement is largely based on humanitarian grounds, such as the UN. However, political motives are a driving force behind some secondary actors’ involvement in this issue.
