Abstract

In 1964, Dr Nils Kock first described the Kock pouch as a low-pressure orthotopic bladder substitute after total or partial cystectomy.1 Despite producing a large volume capacity with excellent function, the Kock bladder pouch never gained popularity as a bladder substitute. Using the same surgical technique, Dr Kock described the continent ileostomy in 1969 as a low-pressure intestinal reservoir and alternative to the end ileostomy after proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis patients.
