Abstract
Sophie Tieck spent two periods of her life in Estonia, totalling nineteen years in all, following her marriage to the Estonian Baron Karl von Knorring. Apart from her correspondence with her brother Friedrich which records their precarious financial situation and Sophie’s determination to return to Germany and pursue her literary career, relatively little is known of their daily life there. Materials held in the University of Tartù reveal a previously unknown contact with the German classicist Karl Morgenstern which originated in their pre‐Estonian period and was sustained at intervals throughout their lives. The five letters of Karl Knorring are of particular interest in providing significant concrete evidence of his own literary activities as a translator and his ambition to act as a mediator between the Russian and German traditions.
