Abstract
Most Wagner operas revolve around themes of innocence and redemption, most commonly through a "love-death." Lohengrin and Parsifal , however, differ in using the device the essay identifies as the "succession scenario" to produce the effect of innocence. The essay outlines the basic rules of the succession scenario and shows both how the scenario illuminates these two operas and how the operas in question provide excellent exemplars of it.
