Abstract

The authors reintroduce the anterior axial projection of the foot as described by Kirby et al (1) and how it can be used to better evaluate a flatfoot deformity when a medial calcaneal displacement osteotomy is contemplated. Over the years, although flatfoot surgery has become more sophisticated in both procedures and the selection of these procedures, many decisions are being made by the surgeon based on clinical examination and previous experiences without relying on a specific test to definitively determine the need for a specific surgical procedure. The use of the Kirby view when evaluating a flatfoot deformity will provide the surgeon with specific knowledge about location of the calcaneus relative to the tibiotalar joint (2–4). If a calcaneal osteotomy is needed, this radiographic view will allow the surgeon to determine, by the use of a preoperative template, how much medial displacement should be performed at the time of surgery.
