Abstract

Australia has consistently seen lower rates of HIV infection and mortality than most countries in the world, and in no small part is that due to the work of the Kirby Institute, part of The University of New South Wales, Australia. For 25 years, from 1986 to 2011, the Institute was known as the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research, before being renamed after retired Australian High Court Justice Michael Kirby, a champion of health and human rights and the HIV response.
