Abstract

The kink-pair formation relaxation peak (Bordoni peak) is reported in high purity gold single crystals having three different crystallographic orientation of 〈110〉, 〈111〉 and 〈100〉, Successive compressional resolved shear stresses were applied to the specimen which caused reduction in the peak temperature, for stresses up to 30 MPa, followed by an increase in the peak temperature for larger stresses, with a tendency to level off at stresses larger than 50 MPa. For all crystallographic orientation, the peak height was found to be sensitive to these stresses increasing approximately in a linear manner. As the frequency of measurement was increased, the peak temperature increased, the peak width narrowed and the peak height decreased. The observation agrees with the kink-pair formation model and its modification.
