Abstract

Measurements of alkaline phosphatase activity of the plasma have established the importance of this enzyme assay in the diagnosis of a variety of diseases. Increased activity of serum alkaline phosphatase has been observed in bone disease, biliary obstruction, and renal disease. A variety of methods involving a number of substrates is available for the assay of alkaline phosphatase. ' The Bessey, Lowry, and Brock procedure has been adapted for kinetic measurements in a recording spectrophotometer and compared with the Shinowara, .Tones, and Reinhart procedure. Kinetic measurements permit more rapid and accurate determination of alkaline phosphatase activity.
