Abstract This paper describes how the kinematic properties of young stars provide information about the forces which act on the interstellar medium. Evidence is presented to support the view that the interstellar medium moves under the influence of nongravitational as well as gravitational forces. Values are given for the mag- nitude of the nongravitational forces and for the solar motion relative to the gravitational circular velocity.
