Abstract

Santa Clara daily. The return trip puts me on a train filled to nearcapacity by boys from Bellarmine College Preparatory School. Often the Bellarmine boys are loud, rude, and obnoxious-Class A jerks, I recently wrote in a letter to the school' principal, Fr. Murphy, S.J. I am observing the day's-end behavior of preppies in packs, their day having consisted mostly of her, please him recitations. Now outnumbering everyone else, in between school discipline and family discipline, the Bell boys misbehave. They talk more loudly than they know is acceptable on a public conveyance. Then, receiving no reprimand, they yell. They crowd the seats and maul each other in mock-fights. When schoolgirls from St. Francis and Castilleja parade past, the Bell boys make crude remarks and then wax obscenely descriptive when the girls are safely gone. To hear them tell, and you can't miss what they tell because it's told at mega-decibels, Bellarmine boys treasure sluts. None has personally yet encountered a slut, but if he did, he'd really carry on. St. Francis girls are stuck-up and damned near useless. For insults, the Bell boys call each other homos.
