Abstract
More than most branches of engineering, geotechnical engineering requires measurement of soil properties before design can be undertaken. The paper reviews five principal themes that are encountered in papers to the Symposium: laboratory testing, in situ testing, importance of stiffness and displacements, development of improved soil models, and effects of disturbance. It discusses these in a general framework of soil modelling, and suggests other areas where further work is needed. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 859983.
