原料及び燃料価格の上昇に伴い，製紙工場では低廉古紙を使用し生産コストを低減したい意向がある。しかしながら低廉古紙には，現在使用している古紙よりも雑多な異物，難離解性古紙が含まれている。これらの異物や難離解性古紙は機器操業の安定を阻害し，品質に於いても重大な欠陥を引き起こす場合がある。
