Abstract

In this paper the use of the daily report of the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) for cross cultural research is described. The author was living in the Soviet Union during the period that the Soviets shot down a Korean Airliner. Shortly after the incident he collected interviews with Soviet citizens and contrasted these impressions with reports carried in the Soviet media in an effort to assess the impact of news reports on the development of belief systems.
