Abstract

Adeniyi E. O. (1976) The Kainji Dam: an exercise in regional development planning, Reg. Studies 10, 233–243. The paper discusses the Kainji Dam as one of the major investment projects in the economic development of Nigeria and one of the projects conceived as a multi-purpose project to promote both national and regional development. A brief locational description and people of the Kainji Dam area and problems of resettlement are given. An appraisal of the regional development implications of the Dam on agriculture, fishing, tourism and wild life as well as national objectives of electricity generation and river navigation is made. The paper concludes by advocating the setting up of a body to take charge of the non-power development aspects of the Dam in order to ensure the full development and enlightened management of the resources of the Kainji Dam region. The paper is illustrated with three maps.
