Abstract

Abstract This practice note explains how, despite persistent impunity in Guatemala for the serious human rights violations that took place during the armed conflict, important changes have taken place within the judiciary that have facilitated the fight against impunity. It shows how a new generation of human rights practitioners has been empowered by judges like Judge Barrientos who used international human rights law, and particularly the judgments of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, to ensure justice was done.
