Abstract
This chapter analyzes the ways in which AKEL and SYRIZA eventually espoused government participation, emphasizing both the structure of political opportunity and the parties’ themselves. The success of these two parties indicates that government participation is increasingly a viable option for RLPs to influence national (and European) politics, as well as a way to remain relevant in the national political and party systems. Analysis reveals how the economic crisis and governing aspirations affected their programs and ideology.
