Abstract

In this, the second of two papers on the Jordanian Co-operative Movement, a detailed description is provided of the coordinating organization, the Jordanian Co-operative Organization (JCO) together with a discussion of some of its problems and prospects. The formal organization is described together with some aspects of the informal organization. Specifically considered are the role and problems of the Co-operative Training Institute, the Co-operative Bank and the Supply and Marketing Department. In addition, attention is drawn to some of the problems associated with personnel recruitment and career trajectories within the JCO, and also to the tension in the organization between the principle of hierarchy and the operational need for flexibility.
