Abstract

The John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 Pub. L. No. 109-364 directed the Secretary of U.S. Department of Defense to establish within the Office of the Secretary of Defense a Joint Technology Office on Hypersonics (JTOH). The purpose of the JTOH is to coordinate and integrate current and future research, development, test, and evaluation programs and system demonstration programs of the U.S. Department of Defense on hypersonics. The JTOH has been formed in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Science & Technology under the Office of the Director, Defense Research & Engineering. The JTOH organization consists of representatives from the Military Components and Defense Agencies as well as other U.S. government agencies involved in hypersonics research. The JTOH has developed top-level roadmaps detailing the hypersonics research programs of the U.S. Department of Defense. This paper details the organizational structure of the JTOH, describes how the JTOH will coordinate and integrate hypersonics research, development, test, & engineering across U.S. Department of Defense Military Components and Defense Agencies, other U.S. government agencies, and the industrial base, and provides a description of the initial set of roadmaps developed by the JTOH.
