Abstract

The electronics industry is similar to the automobile industry in that it is one of the most internationally oriented sectors of Japanese industry. Japanese electronics firms have strengthened international linkages through foreign direct investment (FDI) since 1985 and the creation of a web of corporate alliances in the high-technology subsectors since the late 1980s. The objective of this chapter is to examine what influence growing international linkages have had on the stance of Japanese electronics firms towards market liberalization.
