Abstract

The globalization of communication with the advent of new communication technologies has transformed the communication information environment in such a fundamental way that social scientists speak of the dawn of a new era, ‘the information age’. The introduction of new communication technologies in India and the other Third World countries is inevitable and both ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors are forcefully operating. But how the communication revolution will unfold and shape the quality of life in a developing country like India can hardly be anticipated. In the absence of a comprehensive information policy statement, an examination of individual sectors of the communications environment may provide some clues to possible trends in planning and policy.
