Abstract

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ completed 50 years of existence in 2014 and has grown to become the global gold standard for the assessment of extinction risk for the planet's biological diversity (Smart et al., 2014). It has been referred to as the Barometer of Life (Stuart et al., 2010). It is used by virtually all major international conventions and agreements and has become part of any dialogue regarding conservation and the status of biodiversity. A brief history of the Red List provides enlightenment on how its use has become so ubiquitous (see Hilton-Taylor, 2014, for a detailed history).
