Associazione Nazionale dell' Industria Chimica Several months after tbe recession began in the U. S., it started to be felt with varying intensity in Western Europe. So far as Italian industrial production is concerned, the recession caused a slowing down rather than a stopping of the expansion which has been taking place for several years. The chemical industry, however, suffered not at all. Data for all of 1958 aren't in, but coupling figures for the first nine months with the improvement shown in the last three gives an encouraging picture. In 1957 the index of chemical production (1953 equals 100) increased 4% over 1956. During the first three quarters of last year, the index was up 5.5% over the same period for 1957.
